“My parents are strict but the most important thing they have taught me is to be humble and kind and to always treat others as I would like to be treated myself.” Brooklyn Joseph Beckham came into this world on March 4, 1999, at Portland Hospital in London as the eldest of four children born to singer and fashion designer Victoria Beckham and professional soccer star David Beckham. Thanks to his famous parents, Beckham was raised in the spotlight and made his media debut at only five weeks old when his parents set a new record and accepted $1.8 million from OK Magazine to photograph the new family of three at their penthouse in Manchester. Two months later, his parents married and, within a few years settled down at the massive $3.85 million estate in Hertfordshire dubbed “Beckingham Palace” by the media. Advertisements:

With his father signing a contract to play soccer with LA Galaxy, the Beckhams spent the next five years in Los Angeles, California before they returned to London where the young Brooklyn enjoyed playing soccer and spending time with his siblings. Although he initially considered a career as a professional soccer player, Beckham worried he would never live up to his father’s reputation. Fortunately, his father had something else in mind when he bought his son his very first camera to help him with his photography exam at the Fine Arts College in Holland Park. “I’ve kind of been into photography my whole life; when I was 12 or so, my dad always took photos of me, and I kind of always wanted to know how the camera worked,” Beckham said of his passion. “I started taking my camera everywhere with me… I realized how much I enjoyed the whole process—from taking the images to editing them and developing them and it soon became a complete passion.”

Beckham was enamored by photography but wasn’t quite sure he wanted to make a career out of it, at least not yet. He picked up a part-time job at a local coffee shop and earned $4 per hour. In his spare time, he pursued his interests and built an impressive following on social media. “I hadn’t really thought about doing photography professionally, or really been actually trying to study it—and felt the way I do about it now—until now,” Beckham said of his passion behind the lens. Thanks to social media and his famous last name, Beckham started posting photos on Instagram and amassed a huge following. Before long, he became one of the world’s most visible teenagers with his fame eclipsing that of his parents.

In 2014, Beckham graced his first magazine cover for Man About Town and, by April 2015, already had one million followers on Instagram. Later that year, he made $140,000 for appearing in an advertisement for Huawei and was praised as “one of the hottest prospects in showbiz” by Esquire magazine. His success continued over the next few years as his mother invited him to work with her behind the scenes in the fashion industry. “My mum really helps me with work stuff, and it’s fun,” he said. “I’m going to do backstage photography at her next show, actually. And I actually really want to photograph her for one of her campaigns, which we’re talking about. I love taking pictures of my mum.”

Victoria encouraged her son to pursue his interests even further in New York. “It was actually my mum’s idea to go to New York to study photography,” Beckham said after winning a scholarship to the prestigious Parsons School of Design in 2017. “She does take some photos, but on her phone, usually. But I mean, I’ve always wanted to go to university because people say it’s the best years of their lives. I’m really excited to move and live as a student and really start my photography career.”

Life and Career Today

Still studying photography in New York today, the 20-year-old Beckham is one of the photography industry’s rising stars. He published his first photography book, Brooklyn Beckham: What I See, at 18 years old in 2017. “I never thought I would actually be an author, but it’s been a really fun and a cool experience seeing how much I’ve changed—and my mum and dad are really proud of me, which is dope,” he said. The project was in the works since 2015 when Penguin first approached him with the idea. “I was really shocked, and I couldn’t believe that they’d actually ask me to just yet, because I’d just kind of started,” Beckham said. “It took two years to really get it to its final thing, but it’s been a really cool process and I’m really happy with it. They actually first saw my work on Instagram, which has kind of helped—it’s where I post my photos and use my following to get my work out there, which I feel like is what most people nowadays do.”

And, speaking of Instagram, Beckham has over 10 million followers who anxiously await his next post. “My artsy ones are really popular,” he says. “Most of my photos are black and white, but I just posted this one of me and one of my mates, Cameron Dallas, that I just shot. I took some photos of him that people are really excited about, though I haven’t released them yet. We’re not really working on anything; it’s just kind of a mate thing. He’s one of my close mates and he’s always wanted me to photograph him, so it was just me and him, really. We just went to this random cave in Malibu, but people seem really excited wondering what it’s going to be.”

That excitement continues as Beckham shares his passion for photography with his millions of fans. In fact, he even has some selfie advice and admits that he takes quite a few himself. But his favorite part of photography is taking portraits of random people. “Sometimes I just approach them and don’t even ask and take their photo, so I get a cool reaction, like if they’re mad at me, which is pretty cool,” he says. “But sometimes I go up to them and ask or I do it secretly, so they don’t notice.” Check out What I See for a glimpse of Beckham’s selfie strategy and natural talent!
