When you suffer from being shy as a teenager, one of the last things that you probably want to do is get up on stage in front of a lot of people. Facing your fears is the best way to overcome them, though, and that’s what Kirsten Vangsness did at a young age. It turned out that she was tremendous on stage, and she made her television debut in 2004. It was then that she appeared on an episode of “Phil of the Future” and three episodes of “LAX”.

The next year would turn out to be a huge one for Vangsness, though, as she was cast as Penelope Garcia on the mystery series “Criminal Minds”. Vangsness has remained with the show ever since (that’s still running), and was also part of the main cast for the spin-off called “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior”. Since starting her career on the series, Vangsness has also appeared on shows like “Pretty the Series” and “Good Job, Thanks!” and movies such as “The Chicago 8” and “In My Sleep”.

When her time on “Criminal Minds” started, Vangsness was classified as being overweight, and there were times where it looked like she was maintaining her size, and other times where she looked like she had even put on weight. Around that time, Vangsness also revealed that she was gay, starting a relationship with editor Melanie Goldstein.

The two became engaged, but decided to break things off in 2013. It was then that Vangsness started dating a man named Keith Hanson. However, that wasn’t the biggest surprise for fans after her breakup, but it was actually her sudden transformation. In 2014 when appearing on the red carpet, Vangsness was turning heads after losing a significant amount of weight, with people estimating that she dropped close to 50 pounds.

Fans were curious as to how Vangsness was able to lose so much weight in such a short amount of time, hoping to get some tips from the star. Vangsness didn’t get into too much details, but said that she started reading books and listening to podcasts by Renee Stephens. Stephens is the author of a six week weight loss plan called Full-Filled, and described herself as a former food addict.

Stephens promotes a spiritual form of weight loss, which includes learning to accept yourself and forgetting about buzzwords like discipline and willpower. Stephens, like Vangsness, was once overweight, but was able to get the control necessary to learn how to eat healthier and get more active while not stressing about when the next meal was coming. It was that type of thinking that Vangsness credited for her weight loss.

In the three years since her dramatic weight loss, it’s been impressive to see that Vangsness has been able to maintain almost all of her success. People around her estimate that she’s right around the same weight as when she reached her goal, and has gained only around five pounds back since the most. At 5’7”, it’s estimated that the “Criminal Minds” star is now down to about 150 pounds after tipping the scales at more than 200 pounds.

Fans have had a positive response to Vangsness’s new figure, saying that she looks tremendous. There were some questions from people, though, asking how they would do flashback scenes with Vangsness without using actual footage since she can’t replicate her look from several years ago. That’s the last thing on Vangsness’s mind as she’s been proud of her transformation.

Vangsness has also continued her spiritual connections that helped her lose weight, as she recently went on a meditation retreat with her new man. So far, she’s been very open about some personal aspects of her life, but doesn’t go into too many details about what she eats on a daily basis or what her exercise routine consists of. Whatever it is, it seems to be working for Vangsness.

The future also seems to be a bit of the past for Vangsness, just without the weight. In the summer of 2017, she signed a deal to return once again to “Criminal Minds” to what should be more than 300 episode appearances. It was a bit dicey at first as Vangsness was making much less than some of her other co-stars. Now, it looks like things have been figured out as Vangsness is happy with the new contract, new weight and new outlook on life.

Don’t expect “Criminal Minds” to go anywhere, either, as the series will begin its 13th season in 2017. The ratings aren’t quite as high as they’ve been in the past, but with more than eight million people tuning in per episode, it should keep Vangsness in a comfortable spot for several more years.
