A woman just outside of Edmonton was shot and killed by a Mountie recently, and she was armed with a deadly sword. The woman had called the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to her home early in the morning hours. She had told Mounties that her boyfriend was in her backyard at the time.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team made a statement that the woman was experiencing an abusive relationship with her boyfriend. However, when they arrived, there was nobody in the backyard. She appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time, and was carrying the katana, as well as a knife.
“She detailed what had been happening in her life and was despondent and distraught,” the statement read. “As the call proceeded, RCMP officers were dispatched to the residence. The person speaking with the woman kept her on the line, remaining calm, responsive and attempting to de-escalate the situation, but after some time, the woman said ‘I have to hang up now’ and abruptly ended the call.”
A video showed the woman charging at the Mounties with her katana. “The woman came within very close proximity of the officers, where a confrontation occurred that resulted in one officer discharging a firearm,” the statement continued. “The woman sustained injury and fell to the ground. Immediately, officers attempted to provide emergency medical aid. The woman was transported to (the) hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.”
